Where the sources disagree

Almost all the disagreement here is about measurement conditions rather than biology. Triglycerides swing widely with recent food, alcohol, and illness. A platform that draws blood without confirming a genuine fast, then flags your result against a tight 'optimal' cutoff, is generating findings from noise. Ask what fasting state your draw assumed before you act on the number.

Each claim gets its strongest possible case before it gets its criticism. Several of these are substantially correct.

The strongest case for it

Fasting triglycerides in the 80–150 range often reflect early insulin resistance well before glucose or HbA1c move, so a tighter target catches metabolic dysfunction earlier.

What it leaves out

The threshold is inferred from association studies rather than tested in trials, and triglycerides are the most volatile common lipid marker. A single meal, a drink, or a bad night's sleep moves them substantially.

Grade B: Consistent observational association with hard outcomes, but the specific cutoff is extrapolated rather than trial-tested.

Before you act on your result

  • Requires a genuine 10–12 hour fast for the standard interpretation.
  • Alcohol within 48 hours can substantially elevate results.
  • Very high values (above roughly 500 mg/dL) are a pancreatitis concern and need clinical attention, not optimization.
